Treating Water,
Sustaining
a Hillside Retreat

How EcoTec's SBR retrofit brought Windermere Estate into full regulatory compliance — and kept the gardens green through Kerala's driest months.

A retreat built on nature, pressured by scarcity

Nestled in the hills of Munnar, Windermere Estate is a 60-acre plantation retreat offering 18 rooms across multiple levels, surrounded by cardamom plantations and lush greenery.

The property caters primarily to international guests, making consistent quality standards non-negotiable. Maintaining the estate's natural beauty — especially through dry summer months — requires a reliable, year-round water supply.

The property had an existing sewage treatment setup but required upgrades to comply with updated Pollution Control Board norms and deliver better water quality output — the prior system produced treated water with persistent bad odour, making reuse impractical.

Four operational hurdles standing in the way

Remote hillside operations, fluctuating guest loads, and strict regulatory requirements created a demanding environment for any water treatment upgrade.

Remote location with limited access to skilled maintenance personnel — on-site technical support is scarce.

Seasonal occupancy fluctuations creating highly variable wastewater loads that challenge fixed-capacity systems.

Wide temperature swings (10°C–25°C) affecting the efficiency of biological treatment processes year-round.

Need for a low-power, low-maintenance solution that could run reliably without constant specialist oversight.

An SBR retrofit engineered for the hills

EcoTec retrofitted the existing setup with its Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR) technology — chosen specifically because it addresses every operational constraint Windermere faced.

Technology Deployed

Sequential Batch Reactor

A cyclical, flexible wastewater treatment process designed to handle variable loads without compromise in output quality.

Variable load handling — SBR's batch-cycle design adapts naturally to seasonal occupancy swings without performance degradation.

Temperature resilience — reliable biological treatment performance maintained across the full 10°C–25°C ambient range.

Minimal power & manpower — engineered for low operational overhead, reducing dependence on on-site technical staff.

Regulatory compliance — output quality meets current Pollution Control Board discharge standards for treated effluent.

Four outcomes that transformed operations

Reliable Performance

The system has operated consistently since installation, meeting regulatory norms without disruption to daily operations or guest experience.

Effective Water Reuse

Treated water is reused for irrigation. During peak summer months, this has proven critical given the water scarcity throughout the Munnar region.

Remote Monitoring & Support

Built-in remote monitoring enables the EcoTec team to provide real-time assistance, significantly reducing dependence on on-site technical expertise.

Smooth Implementation

From site assessment to retrofit — the process was professional and seamless, a marked improvement over the client's prior vendor experience.
